Artists have been creating self-portraits for hundreds of years, exposing pieces of themselves as models for their artistic endeavours.
Frida Kahlo is one of my favourite self-portrait artists (roughly 1/3 of her paintings were of the self-portrait variety).
Why a self-portrait? There are a number of reasons why artists have painted self-portraits - one likely being every artist has a subject they can work with at a moment's notice -- themselves. There is also the exploration of oneself through the medium. I have been to many a writing workshop and writing class which expresses the use of daily writings and journaling as a form of therapy and exploration of self as well as a portal to creativity. The exploration of the artist seems to work alongside the growth of the artist.
I started doing photography portraiture in October 2006. I was grieving the loss of my twins. When you experience great loss, you lose yourself or at least I did. Photographing myself became a journey of discovery and exploration, finding myself again.
Years later, I am continually adding to my selfies set.
